Family Practice

The American Academy of Family Physicians defines Family Practice, also known as Family Medicine, as the medical specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and the family. Family practice physicians treat patients regardless of age, sex, or medical problem. Both allopathic and osteopathic physicians can become Family Practitioners, and like doctors in other specialties, they complete internships and residencies in Family Medicine.

The first osteopathic physicians practiced a form of generalized healthcare that could be called Family Medicine. Today, in an era when the public increasingly demands competent and personalized healthcare, the role of family practitioners has become more important than ever. Modern Family Medicine provides an antidote to problems arising from an overly-fragmented health care system and a growing number of medical specialists. Family Practice physicians are generalists who have the knowledge, skill, and practical experience to diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses. They are also trained to refer their patients to other specialists when appropriate.

In addition, family practitioners emphasize the patient-physician relationship and the health of each patient within the context of the family. They focus on building a one-on-one relationship with every patient. The attention given to the physical, psychological, family, and social needs of each patient distinguishes Family Practice from other medical specialties. Family Medicine also addresses disease prevention and health promotion. This approach is a natural fit with Integrative Medicine.

Family Physicians are highly trained in the latest advances in modern biomedicine and many of them are specialists in fields such as Addiction Medicine, Pain Management, and Geriatrics. " Perhaps many doctors are unmindful of the fact that no trouble is either purely physical or purely emotional….Doctors because they can heal us, rightly win our gratitude. When they have a good bedside manner, projecting patience, understanding, and compassion they become our heroes and paragons of wisdom and humanity."
